"The world thinks I’m a god with a scalpel, but right now, I’m just a man begging the universe not to take the only thing that ever made me feel alive."

His Hands Are Shaking-And It’s My Fault

Pain isn't a sharp scream anymore. It’s a dull, rhythmic throb that matches the hiss-click of the ventilator beside my bed. I feel a hand. It’s large, warm, and slightly rough at the fingertips. It’s wrapping around mine with a grip so tight it’s almost desperate.

I force my eyelids to flicker. Julian. He’s still in his surgical scrubs, but the blue fabric is wrinkled and stained with dried blood. My blood. He isn't sitting in a chair; he’s slumped on the edge of my bed, his head bowed, his forehead resting against our joined hands.

"Elara," he breathes. It’s not a doctor’s greeting. It’s a prayer. He reaches out with his free hand to check the monitors, and that’s when I see it. The legendary hands of Dr. Julian Sterling-the hands that can repair a microscopic valve in a beating heart-are trembling.

"Your... hands," I whisper. He pulls his hand back as if he’s been burned. "It’s nothing. Just caffeine and a long shift."

"Liars... shouldn't be... surgeons," I wheeze.

"I stayed because I had to make sure you didn't finish the job," he whispers, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low vibration. "I told you in that OR, Elara. I haven't forgiven you for what you did five years ago. And I refuse to let you die until I do."

"Look at the monitor, Elara," he says softly. "Your heart knows I’m here. It’s racing for me, just like it used to. You can pretend you hate me. But that machine doesn't lie." He finally pulls his hand away, but as he does, his thumb grazes the sensitive skin of my wrist. "Get some sleep, Elara. When you wake up, the real recovery begins. And I promise you... it’s going to hurt a lot more than the surgery."
