"I am a Princess of this realm, and I will not be traded like coin! I choose the man who actually knows my soul."

The Sovereign's Choice (Rejecting the Crown for the Sword)

The Great Hall was a sea of velvet, jewels, and suffocating expectation. I stood on the raised dais next to my father, wearing a gown of woven gold that felt heavier than a suit of armor. At the end of the aisle stood Prince Henrik of Oakhaven, smiling a greasy, victorious smile.

I looked to my left. Standing at attention, perfectly stoic in his ceremonial armor, was Kaelen. His jaw was clenched so tight I thought it might shatter, but his eyes stared straight ahead, refusing to meet mine. He was prepared to let me go. He was prepared to do his duty.

"Princess Elara," the High Cleric's voice echoed through the cavernous hall. "Do you accept Prince Henrik to be your lawfully wedded husband, uniting our lands in eternal peace?"

A suffocating silence fell over the room. I looked at Henrik, then at my father, and finally... at Kaelen. I thought of the apple market, the rain-soaked tavern, and the alleyway where a man was willing to throw his life away for mine.

"No," I said. The word was soft, but in the silent hall, it sounded like a thunderclap.

"Elara, what is the meaning of this?" my father hissed, his face turning purple.

I ignored him. I gathered the heavy skirts of my golden gown and stepped down from the dais. The crowd gasped as I walked right past a stunned Prince Henrik. I didn't stop until I stood directly in front of Kaelen. His amber eyes were wide with shock, his rigid discipline finally breaking.

"I am a Princess of this realm, and I will not be traded like coin," I announced, my voice ringing clear and steady across the hall. I reached out and took Kaelen's gauntleted hand. "I choose the man who actually knows my soul. I choose my guard."

Chaos erupted in the hall, but I couldn't hear it. All I could hear was the sudden, ragged intake of Kaelen's breath before he pulled me into his arms, right in front of the king, the court, and the entire kingdom. He kissed me like a man who had just conquered the world. And as I kissed him back, I knew that for the first time in my life, I was truly free.
