“My family always chose Colin. I stopped coming home when I realised no one noticed the empty chair.”

One Bed No Escape

By morning, the cabin is colder than the snow outside.

Daniel finds canned soup, two dusty blankets, and a generator that coughs once before dying. I follow him to the shed because sitting alone means remembering Colin’s hands on someone else.

“Hold the torch,” Daniel says.

“I can do more than hold things.”

“I know.”

The answer comes too quickly.

I kneel beside him while he cleans the fuel line. His fingers are scarred, his movements patient. This is not the Daniel from family stories—the reckless dropout, the bitter brother, the man who abandoned everyone.

“You own a repair shop?” I ask.

“A workshop. Custom motorcycles, restorations, anything people think is too broken to save.”

The generator finally roars. When the cabin lights flicker on, I throw my arms around him without thinking.

Daniel freezes.

So do I.

His hands settle carefully at my waist before I step away.

That evening, the wind breaks a window in the second bedroom. The remaining room has one narrow bed.

“I will take the floor,” he says.

“You will freeze.”

“I have survived worse.”

Under the blankets, we lie back-to-back until my shivering becomes impossible to hide. Daniel turns and pulls me against his chest. Heat surrounds me. His breath moves through my hair.

“Why did you stay away from the family?” I whisper.

His arm tightens.

“Colin crashed our fathers car when we were teenagers. I took the blame because he begged me. They sent me away. Years later, he admitted the truth.” Daniel laughs without humour. “They forgave him for lying. No one apologised to me.”

I turn to face him.

“You protected someone who let you be punished.”

“That is what I was raised to do.”

Moonlight catches the pain in his eyes.

I place my palm over his heart. “You can stop now.”

Daniel looks at my mouth, then closes his eyes.

“If I kiss you tonight, Natalie, you will wonder whether it was the cold.”

The space between us burns.

“And if you do not?”

“I will wonder for the rest of my life.”

One bed, two broken hearts, and a kiss Daniel refuses to steal from a vulnerable woman. Did his restraint make the tension even hotter? Tell us whether Natalie should close the distance, tap ❤️ for protective Daniel, and send this chapter to your favourite slow-burn reader! 🛏️
