"I thought I knew Adam because I knew what he was like in my bed. His hometown proved I barely knew him at all."
I Never Knew Him at All
Staying in Adam's childhood home forces us into a quiet, domestic intimacy we have spent months aggressively avoiding. Over three days, I see photographs of him holding his baby niece. I hear stories from his neighbors about how he quietly pays for groceries when families fall on hard times. I learn that his emotional distance isn't because he feels nothing - it's the exact opposite. He loves so fiercely, and is so incredibly loyal, that he keeps relationships shallow to protect himself from the crushing weight of caring too much. He liked our casual arrangement because it let him have me without admitting he was terrified of losing me.
By the fourth day, his lawyer calls. The security footage from the garage corroborated my story; Tyler was arrested, and Adam is cleared. We are safe to go back.
But I am not leaving without an answer. I find Adam on the back porch, watching the sun dip below the tree line.
"You can't pretend this didn't mean anything," I say, stepping out into the cool evening air.
He leans against the wooden railing, trying for his usual deflective smirk. "It was just an extended road trip, Megan."
"A man doesn't get arrested twice, drive me across state lines, and accidentally introduce me to half his childhood without having feelings," I counter, closing the distance between us.
Adam drops the smirk. The raw, unfiltered truth finally shows in his dark brown eyes. "The night you cried in front of me... it changed everything. I left because sitting there, listening to what Tyler did to you, made me so violently angry I didn't trust myself to stay in the room." He reaches out, his rough thumb tracing my jawline. "I kept my distance because I knew I could never be casual with you again. You were never just an arrangement to me. You were always the end of the line."
I don't thank him for saving me. Instead, I pull him down by his faded henley, choosing the man he truly is. When our lips finally meet, there is no hesitation, no holding back. He finally lets me into the guarded, beautiful pieces of his life, and for the first time in my life, I am exactly where I belong.
"You were always the end of the line." 😭 BRB, crying forever! We are so happy Megan finally let Adam all the way in. What was your favorite moment of Adam and Megan's journey? Hit ❤️ to celebrate this ending, and stay tuned for our next story! 👇
