“I was afraid he might break your heart. Finding out you handed it to him as part of a marketing exercise is somehow worse.”
Telling Her Father the Truth (One Final Performance)
My father corners us in his hotel study three hours before the anniversary dinner.
Ryan and I have barely arrived when Dad closes the door and folds his arms.
“How long are you planning to continue this?” he asks.
My rehearsed smile vanishes.
Ryan steps forward. “Mr. Bennett—” he begins.
“Do not sell me anything, Carter,” Dad interrupts.
The room goes still.
I confess before Ryan can protect me. I explain the comparison with my sister, the invented boyfriend, the dinner, and the arrangement that should have ended after one night.
Dad looks from me to Ryan.
“So you are not dating my daughter?” he asks.
“No,” Ryan says.
The word lands harder than it should.
Then he adds, “But I have never treated her feelings as a joke.”
Dad studies him for a long moment before exhaling.
To my surprise, he looks relieved.
“I thought you were secretly playing with her,” he admits. “This is ridiculous, but at least she knew the rules.”
Knew.
Past tense.
Dad glances toward the ballroom where my mother is directing flowers, musicians, and enough candles to illuminate the entire city.
“If she discovers this now, she will spend her anniversary worrying about Sophie instead of celebrating forty years with me,” he says.
He rubs a hand over his face.
“Finish tonight. Tell her tomorrow.”
Ryan and I agree.
One final performance.
In the corridor, I force a laugh. “Almost over,” I say.
Ryan does not smile.
“Is that what you want?” he asks.
“It was always the plan,” I reply.
His jaw tightens. “Plans change,” he says.
Before I can answer, Maya calls me about work. Ryan walks away while I am speaking, his shoulders rigid beneath his suit.
Later, he sends me the schedule for the anniversary dinner, followed by a second message.
Ryan: After tonight, there are no rules.
I stare at the words.
For the first time, ending the lie feels more frightening than being caught in it.
Because somewhere between rehearsed memories and real midnight messages, I stopped pretending that losing Ryan would not hurt.
The truth is finally out, but Ryan looked more wounded by the ending than by the confession! Do you think Sophie understands what he meant by no more rules? Share your prediction below! 👇 Hit ❤️ if you are desperate for Ryan to say what he really feels!
