“I thought choosing would make everything clearer. Instead, I ended up alone with every feeling I had been avoiding.”
What Was Still Waiting
I didn't immediately jump into anything with Ethan. I didn't even text him. Instead, I went back to my own apartment in the city and returned to my normal life.
For six weeks, I sat in the uncomfortable, quiet aftermath of my breakup. I learned what my mornings felt like without Caleb's scheduled check-ins. I learned how to cook dinner for one, how to fill my weekends, and how to exist in an empty room without feeling a desperate urge to run. And in that quiet space, I realized something vital: I missed Caleb as a person, but I did not miss our relationship. I would have ended things even if Ethan Russo had never existed.
Ethan respected the space completely. He barely contacted me, sending only two brief, polite texts to check on my family's move.
When Autumn officially arrived, I found a reason to drive back to my hometown. This time, I didn't bump into Ethan by accident. I sought him out deliberately. I found him at the local hardware store, loading supplies into the bed of his truck. When he saw me walking across the parking lot, his hands stalled, his dark eyes locking onto mine with a cautious hope.
"I did what you wanted," I said, stopping a few feet away from him. The crisp air whipped my hair around my face. "I went home. I lived with the decision. And I realized you were right to send me away. But I'm available now, Ethan. Truly, entirely available."
He leaned against the side of his truck, letting out a long, slow breath. "You're sure? You're sure you want to turn whatever this emotionally intense thing is between us into a real relationship?"
"I never answered your question before," I replied, stepping closer, until I could smell the familiar cedar and cold air clinging to his jacket. "You asked what exactly was happening between us."
Ethan watched me carefully. "And what's your answer?"
I didn't use words this time. I closed the final gap between us, reaching up to cup his jaw, and kissed him. It was soft at first, testing the waters, before Ethan made a low sound in his throat, wrapping his arms securely around my waist and pulling me flush against his chest.
When we finally pulled away, resting our foreheads together, there were no grand declarations of eternal love or promises of forever. It was simpler than that. Ethan brushed a thumb across my cheek and smiled.
"Let me take you on a real first date, Collins. Friday night. No moving boxes allowed."
I smiled back, my heart fluttering against my ribs. For the first time in four years, I was genuinely nervous about a date. And it felt absolutely perfect.
