“Ethan told me to make a choice. I hated that part of me already knew why.”
When Both Doors Closed
I called Caleb on Tuesday night and finally initiated the conversation we had been actively avoiding for months.
I didn't mention Ethan. Ethan wasn't the reason the relationship was dying; he was just the catalyst that made me open my eyes to how deeply lonely I had become. The phone call was agonizing. Caleb was blindsided, hurt, and defensive. He asked, his voice cracking with betrayal, if there was someone else.
I closed my eyes, tears spilling hot and fast down my cheeks. I couldn't honestly say no. I told him that I couldn't pretend four fading years should magically become five just because neither of us had done anything terrible. Being comfortable with someone was no longer the same thing as actively choosing them.
When the call ended, my world felt entirely demolished. I was hyperventilating, emotionally wrecked, and acting entirely on instinct. I grabbed my keys, drove through the dark streets, and pounded on Ethan's front door.
He answered in sweatpants and a plain white tee, his face softening the moment he saw my tear-streaked cheeks. I practically fell into his hallway. I wanted the comfort I had started associating with his scent, his presence, his steady voice. I reached for him, grabbing the fabric of his shirt, pulling him down toward me.
Ethan caught my wrists. His grip was firm, holding me back just inches from his lips.
"Ethan, please," I sobbed, feeling thoroughly rejected.
"No, Allison," he said, his voice agonizingly gentle but unyielding. "If we do anything tonight, if I kiss you right now, you will wake up tomorrow and always wonder if you left Caleb just to be with me."
"I just blew up my entire life!" I yelled, yanking my hands away, anger flaring through my grief. "I came to you because I thought you wanted me!"
"I do want you," Ethan said, staring at me with a raw, burning intensity that stopped the breath in my throat. "Which is exactly why I am making you go home alone. You don't get to use me as an escape hatch. You need to be sure."
I left his house furious, crying harder than before, entirely convinced that my own messy heart had just cost me both men in a single, devastating night.
