“The guilt came after I smiled at his message. That was the part I could not ignore.”

Three Is a Crowded Room

Caleb surprised me on Friday. He managed to clear his schedule and showed up on my parents' doorstep with a bouquet of flowers and his signature charming smile. I should have been thrilled. A year ago, I would have thrown my arms around his neck and cried. Instead, I felt a heavy stone drop into my stomach.

Having Caleb and Ethan in the same town - in the same space - made everything painfully, irrevocably obvious.

Caleb was affectionate and familiar. He held my hand, kissed my temple, and made pleasant conversation with my parents. But there was a strange, echoing absence between us. He was talking to the Allison from eighteen months ago. He barely knew the version of me I had become.

Ethan, meanwhile, kept his distance so carefully that I felt every single inch of it.

We all ended up at a casual backyard barbecue hosted by a mutual friend. Caleb met Ethan by the drink cooler, and to my absolute horror, Caleb liked him immediately. They bonded over sports and the logistical nightmare of moving furniture. I watched them from across the patio, my heart pounding in my throat. Later that evening, Caleb slung an arm around my waist, talking excitedly to our friends about my eventual move to his city. He spoke about it as if the decision was already finalized, discussing our future like it was a complex logistical puzzle that simply required a spreadsheet to solve. He never paused to ask if it was still what I wanted.

After Caleb left on Sunday morning, the silence in my house was deafening. I couldn't take it anymore. I marched over to Ethan's house, finding him in his driveway fixing a lawnmower. He had been freezing me out all weekend, his previously warm demeanor replaced with a rigid, professional courtesy.

"Why are you acting like I don't exist?" I demanded, crossing my arms to keep them from trembling.

Ethan dropped his wrench. He stood up, wiping grease from his hands with a rag, his dark eyes flashing with a frustration I had never seen before. "Because spending time with you doesn't feel innocent to me anymore, Allison. And I won't be the reason you cheat on a good guy."

"Nothing physical has happened!" I shot back defensively.

Ethan took a step closer, towering over me, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "We both know that is not the point anymore. You're emotionally halfway out the door, and I refuse to hold it open for you. Make a choice."

Ethan is NOT playing games! 👏 He refuses to be the other man, and we have to respect that boundary! Is Caleb oblivious, or just trying to hold onto the past? Tell us whose side you're on in the comments! 👇 Smash that ❤️ if you're loving this tension, and share to keep the drama going!
