"I've got you. I'm not letting the fire touch you, Clara. Just look at me."
Into the Wreckage (When the Ice Melts)
The storm hit right at the end of my double shift. I was exhausted, my eyes heavy as I navigated the slick, winding mountain road toward home. I never saw the semi-truck drift into my lane. The impact was deafening—a horrifying crunch of metal and shattering glass. My car spun violently, slamming into the concrete barrier before flipping.
When I came to, the world was sideways. Smoke choked my lungs, and searing heat licked at the crushed hood. My legs were pinned beneath the steering column. I panicked, my medical training flashing before my eyes as I realized the car was catching fire.
Then, over the roar of the flames, I heard it. A calm, unwavering voice.
"I'm here. Stay with me, Clara."
The jaws of life ripped the driver-side door away. Through the smoke, I saw him. Hayes. His face was streaked with soot, but his gray eyes were locked onto mine with an intensity that anchored my spinning world. He reached into the burning wreckage, heedless of the jagged metal tearing at his heavy jacket.
"It hurts," I sobbed, losing my cool completely as the flames grew closer.
"I've got you," he said softly, his strong arms wrapping securely around my shoulders. "I'm not letting the fire touch you, Clara. Just look at me."
With one powerful heave, he pulled me free just as the dashboard ignited. He shielded my body with his own, carrying me into the freezing rain. In that chaotic, terrifying moment, pressed against his chest, I heard his heartbeat. It was hammering. He wasn't a machine after all.
